"SOUL SEARCHING"

Updated: Feb 11, 2022

“SOUL SEARCHING” aims to:

Research and explore the “soul/spirit/divine” in order to try and understand what it is and make this intangible thing more manifest through creative practices, most especially abstract visuals and sounds/music.

What it is. What it isn’t. How can I experience it and connect to it? What did it mean to us historically, what does it mean presently and how could that change in the future? How is it a part of us? How is it a part of nature? What does it feel like? What does it sound like? And so many more questions…

Researching unseen and unmanifest things such as the “soul/spirit/divine” is rather challenging as the language used in order to talk about them is ambiguous. Many people have explored these mysterious invisible parts of experiential reality, but from different perspectives and using different language and terminology.

In order to research topics like this, I feel it is important to look at them from our own historical Western explorations of the subject and how they fit into the context of our wider cultural understandings.

Aside from some Jungian based philosophies that explore “soul/spirit/divine” there are many more perspectives and accounts of this topic within Alchemy, Theosophy, Kabballah, Hermetics, Freemasonry, Rosicrucianism and (Gaelic) witchcraft.

For this project “Soul Searching” I wish to research the “soul/spirit/divine” from as many perspectives as possible and explore my findings, experimenting with how I can embody my interpretations using experimental film with abstract visuals and audio.

I have in principle been able to confirm access to the members library at the Theosophical Society in Edinburgh, the Spiritualist library at the Arthur Conan Doyle Centre in Edinburgh and Sir Walter Scott’s private collection of Occult books held at Abbotsford house. I am also a member of the Rosicrucian Order, The Order of Women’s Freemasonry, The Theosophical Society Edinburgh, a local Coven of practicing Witches and have links to the Kabballah Centre, London where I wish to research the “soul/spirit/divine” in the present day, through personal witness accounts as well as their individual understandings of their own research and experiences.

I would like to collate my research and findings as well as my own creative interpretations here, online. To create a space for this exploration of “Soul Searching” for people to engage with in their own way, as a sort of online exhibition.
